7 Steps to Self Esteem: The Mood Boost Routine
We all know how important self esteem is in our lives. Without self esteem, life can be quite rough. We can’t live as ourselves without self esteem, and we can never be truly effective if we are not living as ourselves. So here’s something to give a whirl in the morning. I call it the “Mood Boost Routine” because it helps to put you in a positive frame of mind as you go about your day. It doesn’t have to be done in the morning, but if you want to start your day off on the right foot, that’s when I recommend doing it. Step 1: Dump Your Brain Spend 20 minutes and dump all your thoughts out of your head. Write about what’s troubling you, what you’re worried about, your fears, your frustrations, your agony, your pain. Get all your thoughts out of your head and down on paper. Don’t hold back, you’re not sharing this with anyone. It will feel good to get these thoughts out, so do it! Just let them flow out, whatever comes to mind. This will help clear the clutter out of your head and make room for some positive juices to enter. Step 2: Get in a Good Stretch This may seem like a weird step in a self esteem boosting routine, but it’s something that’s actually quite beneficial. When you stretch, you loosen up a lot of the tension in your body. This not only makes you feel good, but it improves your posture. Posture is an important part of a confident look, which will be important later in this self esteem mission. So get in a good stretch and be ready to feel awesome. Step 3: Go to the Mirror and Smile Yes, you knew smiling was coming, I’m sure. But I want you to smile at the most important person in your life: yourself. Go to the mirror, look yourself in the eye, and smile. And don’t just smile for the sake of smiling. Smile because you know this is going to be an awesome day. Smile because you have an opportunity to live another day, and you have the opportunity to live as yourself, to act as yourself, and to think as yourself. Take pride in these opportunities, and smile at yourself. Step 4: Feel the Warmth Carry the smile away from the mirror and feel yourself warming up inside. Feel the smile move from your face down into your heart. Actually imagine that the smile is a tiny ball of energy that spreads itself through your entire body. Believe that your whole body is smiling. Again, don’t just do this for the sake of doing it. Actually feel the reasons behind it. Smile with your entire body because you have a lot to be grateful for, such as... Step 5: Make a List of Gratitude This doesn’t have to take long. Sit down for 5-10 minutes and write a list of as many things as you can think of that you are grateful for. This could be your home, your family, your health, your friends, your life, your job, or your pets. It could also be your opportunity to do something better with your life in the days to come. It could be your opportunity to change your situation for the better. You have life, therefore you have hope. That is always something to be grateful for. Make a big list, and feel the gratitude. Step 6: Write Down a Strength We all have a unique set of skills, talents, and abilities. You are certainly no different. I’m sure you realize you are good at something. Take five minute and write about one of your special strengths. As you write, think of a way you can use that strength to improve your current situation. Think of a way you can better implement that strength in your day-to-day life. Think of a way to utilize that strength to get the most out of your day today. You don’t have to stop at five minutes, but make sure you at least cover those basics. Finding a way to increasingly bring out your strengths is a great way to build self esteem. Always focus on your strengths and try to spend more time using them to create a special life. Step 7: Show Off Your Self Esteem and Walk Around with Confidence This is the end of the mood boost. You’ve dumped your thoughts, stretched out some tension, brought a smile to your face and body, written about gratitude and strengths; now it’s time for you to show your true self. As you go about your day, walk around with pride in the fact that you are who you are. Today you have an opportunity to use your special strengths to do something amazing. You have hope for a brighter future. Smile to yourself and smile to the world. You are a special part of it, and today you are going to take full advantage of your piece.
